TC50 People’s Choice Winner YourVersion Comes To The iPhone

Last September, YourVersion took the stage at TechCrunch50 as the DemoPit People’s Choice winner, after receiving the most votes from conference attendees. The startup’s goal is fairly simple: to help you find content that you’re interested in, in real time. And now it’s bringing its application to the iPhone. You can download the free app here.

The app is pretty straightforward. First, you enter some topics that you’re interested in. Every time you launch the app, you’ll be presented with a list of these topics. Clicking on one will bring you to a list of recent blog posts, tweets, and other content that contains those topic keywords. You can also filter through this content by source, allowing you to see only content from Twitter, news sites, and so on. If you’ve already set up an account on the YourVersion website, you can sync that with the app (any items you bookmark or share from the app will be reflected on the site as well).

Did Former President George W. Bush’s Grandfather, Prescott Bush, Help Adolf Hitler’s Rise to Power?

Did former President George W. Bush’s grandfather, Prescott Bush, help Adolf Hitler rise to power? Well, an article in the U.K. Guardian seems to make that claim. Here’s an excerpt from the article, entitled “How Bush’s Grandfather helped Hitler’s Rise to Power.”

George Bush’s grandfather, the late US senator Prescott Bush, was a director and shareholder of companies that profited from their involvement with the financial backers of Nazi Germany. The Guardian has obtained confirmation from newly discovered files in the US National Archives that a firm of which Prescott Bush was a director was involved with the financial architects of Nazism.

The Distinction Between Liberal Religion and Fundamentalist Faith

I can’t say it is very often (if at all in the past) that I would find myself saying “Amen” to something that Christopher Hitchens, the author of God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything, would say.  In an interview between atheist Hitchens and Unitarian minister Marilyn Sewell he says something I can wholeheartedly agree with:

The SOTU “lecture”

Over at Hot Air, King Banaian provides an excellent commentary about one attitude of the political left toward those who fail to agree with their political goals.

The notion that we know enough to know what is in someone else’s best interest is evidence of this fallacy, and I have found over the succeeding decades there are many academics that fall into it. Applied in the political sphere, it takes the form of “why does the public not understand what we are trying to do?” We heard it in President Obama’s State of the Union address last week in his claim that his failure on health care was “not explaining it more clearly to the American people.” It characterizes the thoughts of Thomas Frank in “What’s the Matter With Kansas?, a book that I found alternately patronizing and pathetic, arguing that it must be false consciousness or hypnotizing demagoguery that leads the working class of Kansas, once home of agricultural Wobblies, to now vote consistently conservative.

Big hitters

The entries over the weekend (taking the scores on the doors to 232) include double winner Jock Waddington, 12 times finisher Irene Taggart and another of the favourites, Michael George who returns after a year concentrating on what most people would call long distance but parish walkers would call short distance stuff.

San Francisco Rickrolls Westboro

On Friday the Westboro Baptist Church descended on the San Francisco headquarters of Twitter, because God hates social networking. Or something. The above photo from the exuberant counter-protest was sent in by JMG reader Craig. Go here for many more hilarious signs.
